What happens when you are involved in a car accident with an Uber or Lyft?

Ridesharing programs are everywhere now, especially with Uber and Lyft. With a large number of these vehicles on the roads today it’s important to consider what could happen if you are involved in a car accident with a Lyft or Uber.

Lyft and Uber generally have their own insurance policies that can cover their drivers. Many ridesharing drivers also have to take out different types of insurance policies to run these types of vehicles. Insurance for both of these ridesharing programs sits at around $250,000 which is greatly diminished compared to some of the original insurance policies that the company was offering to its drivers.

What is unique about a car accident involving a ridesharing car is that you will not have access to PIP benefits. PIP benefits are available in Florida as part of no-fault insurance. This area of insurance typically pays out around $10,000 for initial medical bills. If you are injured while in a ridesharing car, you will not be covered under the insurance policy of the owner of the vehicle but you can use your own personal car insurance or the insurance of a resident or relative you live with to cover these costs.

If you are driving for Uber or Lyft, you can have access to a comprehensive insurance policy that can cover repairs on your vehicle as well as for the repairs on other vehicles that were involved in the crash. You will be responsible for taking out an additional insurance policy on your vehicle that can cover POP benefits for yourself while you are working.

The difficult part here for Uber drivers is finding an insurance policy that will let them access PIP benefits and insure a vehicle that is going to be used primarily for ridesharing. A number of insurance companies will not offer reasonable rates on insurance for vehicles that take on these tasks.

If you’ve ever been involved in an Uber or Lyft accident, it is important that you are able to make a claim in the event that you are injured.
